- Calculus Support
Dear MATH 150/151 students,
You can check your score on your Math Diagnostic Test as follows.
Login at .
Select your student role next to Math Diagnostic Test 1077.
Go to the Main Menu.
From there you can find your grades for all assessments that you have done in
this "course", including your Diagnostic Test score.
If you scored well on the Diagnostic Test then your knowledge of algebra,
trigonometry, analytic geometry, and functions should be sufficient preparation
for calculus.
If you did not score well on the Diagnostic Test, especially if you scored less
than 18/30, then you would benefit from a review of precalculus material.
The Mathematics Department has set up a series of 10 Calculus Support Sessions
for this purpose.
Since students vary in what background material they need to review, we have
set up a series of online pretests, one for each support session, to help you
to decide whether or not you would benefit from participating in the upcoming
session. The material covered in the support sessions is closely related to the
material on the corresponding pretest. After attending the session, there will
be a corresponding online posttest to help you to assess how much you have
learned from doing this review.
The pre- and post-tests and support sessions will occur in the following order.
Pretest 1
Calculus Support Session 1
Posttest 1
Pretest 2
Calculus Support Session 2
Posttest 2
and so on...
Each pretest and posttest consist of a small set of problems and is meant to be
completed in 30 minutes. These will be available anytime between 16:00 Mondays
and 24:00 Wednesdays.
Note that 5% of your course grade is based on review. This is based on the
better of
A. Math Diagnostic Test
B. Max (Pretest 1, Posttest 1) + Max (Pretest 2, Posttest 2) + ... + Max
(Pretest 10, Posttest 10)
Your Math Diagnostic Test score is assigned as follows.
80% and above -> 5/5
below 80% but at least 60% -> 2.5/5
below 60% -> 0/5
Thus students who scored at least 80% (24/30) cannot improve their grade by
doing the pre-tests and post-tests, although they can write them if they wish.
Students who scored below 80% but at least 60% may improve their grade on this
component of the course by doing the extra pre- and post-tests.
Students who scored below 60% will almost certainly improve their grade on this
component of the course, and should be motivated to take advantage of this
additional support since their initial grade is 0/5.
The pretests are meant to be taken without preparation. However, if you have
any difficulty with them you are encouraged to participate in the upcoming
Calculus Support Session, especially if you expect to score better on the
follow-up posttest. If your posttest score is higher then this will be used in
place of your score on the pretest.
The current schedule for Calculus Support Sessions at the Burnaby campus is
09:30 - 10:20 Friday in AQ 4100
10:30 - 11:30 Friday in AQ 4100
13:30 - 14:20 Monday in AQ 4100
14:30 - 15:20 Monday in AQ 4100
These sessions begin Friday, Sept 14.
Calculus Support Sessions are also available at the Surrey campus. Contact
Randall Pyke (rpyke@sfu.ca) for more details.
No advance registration is required at this time. However, these are repeat
sessions and so you should not attend more than one.
You will find all pre- and post-tests as follows.
1. Login to LON-CAPA at .
2. Select your student role next to Math Diagnostic Test and Calculus Support
1077
3. From the main page, select "Navigate Contents" at the top of your screen.
Students experienced difficulty finding Pretest 1, which was due Wednesday, and
so the deadline for this has now been extended to 24:00 Sunday, Sept 16.
Posttest 1 and Pretest 2 will both be available between 16:00 Monday, Sept 17
and 24:00 Wednesday, Sept 19.
Kind regards,
